Middleton Square Project

Moving across town, our homeowner clients wanted a different look for their new place.  They'd had some mid-century pieces in storage, while their current furnishings were more traditional in style.  Two Poppies Design helped these homeowners realize the potential of their new spaces with an exciting mix of updated traditional and mid-century modern styles in a bold color scheme.  Throughout their home, we incorporated their pieces which had been stowed away in storage along with a mix of newly refreshed pieces in both traditional and mid-century styles.  Plenty of custom-made textiles and a fun mix of decor elements make this a lively home for this young family.

Living & Dining Spaces

As the first space you enter into their home, our homeowners wanted a real wow moment.  New light fixtures in gold tones, incorporating both modern candelabra and retro sputnik styles, set the scene for the mix of traditional and mid-century inspired elements in the home.  Right away the vibrant color choices - pinks, blues and greens - are apparent in the furnishings and decor.  Two Poppies Design worked with the homeowners to use as many of their collected furniture pieces as possible, including the buffet in the adjoining dining space (a beautiful mid-century design).  Custom-made drapery panels with a bright floral by Two Poppies Design showcase the color scheme throughout the open main floor.

Custom-made pillows along with store-bought finds incorporate the pinks, blues and greens with traditional prints and velvets on the extra-deep pair of sofas.  The homeowners can easily swap the pillow covers for more graphic prints during the summer season, while keeping the palette continuous.

One of the largest pieces that Two Poppies Design reimagined for the homeowners was this gorgeous bright raspberry mid-century china cabinet.  The bold color was pulled from the palm frond wallpaper and makes quite a statement in the nearby breakfast area.  Gold bar pulls coordinate beautifully with the slim lines of the candelabra-style light fixture.  The homeowners' rug, brought from their previous residence, is a great way to add subtle pattern and color variation in the space.

We played off of the homeowners' favorite color, blue, and refinished a sideboard for their living space.  The piece functions perfectly as their media console, with hidden storage for games, toys and the like.  Original brass-plated hardware and a gorgeous wood top blend seamlessly with their other decor.

Main Bedroom

A simple upholstered bed in a light neutral fabric provides an excellent backdrop for an array of custom-made pillows.  Two Poppies Design adorned the windows with a heavy-weight fabric printed in a bold blue floral pattern.  With 10-foot ceilings, the drapes encase the windows, while still allowing plenty of light into the room.  A selection of fabrics in shades of pink, orange, blue and green adorn the pillows.  The king-size bed is flanked by a pair of mid-century modern nightstands that were brought from storage in excellent condition.

To capture more traditional elements within the large bedroom, Two Poppies Design reimagined a low-slung coffee table (original manufacturer: Lane Industries) into a cozy and sophisticated bench.  The length jives perfectly with the large bed, while the deep raspberry paint plays off the pillow fabrics.  Faux fur makes for a luxurious landing spot for putting on shoes.

Another Two Poppies Design project was the reupholstering of the homeowners' armless sofa.  A textured tweed in warm gray and cream gives a nod to mid-century era fabrics, while more custom-made pillows layer to complete the look.

Daughter's Bedroom

For the homeowners' young daughter's bedroom, Two Poppies Design reworked a more traditional bow-front dresser with ebony stain and new pale gold hardware.  The fluted and gently curved details on the dresser are complemented with the pair of blush pink ceramic lamps.  Another fun touch to the space - a reupholstered mid-century slipper chair.  The curved shape and low seat are perfect for the daughter at this age, but will work as she gets older.  The black and white spotted fabric adds a bit of whimsy, while a chunky textured pillow adds pops of color.  As their daughter grows, she can swap out accessories while keeping her furniture pieces for years to come.

Son's Bedroom

The homeowners' son had a simple request for his new bedroom - he wanted his favorite colors incorporated into the design.  Two Poppies Design met the challenge and kept the homeowners happy by adding pops of color in strategic ways.  We added a fun set of stripes onto this groovy mid-century chest of drawers (note the shape of the original pulls).  Previously someone had covered this great little chest with globs of turquoise chalk paint - luckily we brought it back to it's original woodgrain and added the lively blues and oranges.

By reupholstering a more traditional arched headboard from the homeowners' previous home, Two Poppies Design brought a fun textural element into their son's room, in his color of choice - teal.  The wavy pattern and nubby texture keep the headboard cozy for resting against while reading his favorite books.  Beside the bed a mid-century nightstand brought from storage was topped with a custom-built shelf to match the warm wood tones.  Now their son has smile-evoking, colorful elements in a space that can grow with him.
