Meru Manor Project
Blending vintage traditional pieces with a more clean-lined aesthetic, saturated earthy colors with light and airy neutrals, and a bit of glam rock'n'roll within a colonial-style house was the project at hand for Two Poppies Design. The homeowners had plenty of furnishings and one-of-a-kind finds to incorporate in their spaces. We brought in more color, furniture scaled to the rooms' sizes, and textural elements to make the space speak to the owners' personalities. See how more modern forms meld with classic silhouettes in this inviting and thoughtfully layered home.
Living Room
A few key pieces were all it took to bring the living space to fruition. A rather lengthy credenza now serves as a media console in the living room, housing games, media components and extra throw blankets. Details on the vintage piece stand out in rich terracotta, as the refinished wood top needed only a good sanding job and protective topcoat. Opposite the large console, the homeowner's creamy sectional is stacked with a variety of textural pillows. The color story continues on the refinished coffee table (note the matching woodgrain of both the coffee table and media console). The simple oblong shape gravitates toward the modern design style while the layering of collected objects gives a sense of age. The warm tones of the pieces are woven subtly in the homeowners' traditional-style wool rug.
Vintage-inspired drop pulls work perfectly to access the drawer storage within the media console. The intricate details of the pulls mimic the carved corner details in the cabinet's doors.
Dining Room
Bold and beautiful is what the our clients wanted for their dining room. Olive green paint - a favorite of the homeowner's - coats the walls and trim and serves as a lively backdrop for their furniture. Two Poppies Design spotted the vintage Thomasville sideboard at a local shop and snagged it for a steal. We then sanded, freshly stained and top-coated the piece, and reattached the original hardware. The beauty of the sideboard is elevated by the homeowners' pair of crystal lamps, accessories and antique mirror collected over the years. The traditional elements are balanced by crisp black touches in the modern graphic wool rug and exotic bird drapes. Two Poppies Design custom-made the drapes after the owner fell in love with the flocked bird motif. Hanging the drapes with large gold rings on an acrylic and gold rod brings a layer of edge to the space.
A set of eight curvaceous and comfortable dining chairs were reupholstered in two fabrics - a herringbone texture for the chair backs and a wipeable vinyl for the seats. The chairs were finished with antique brass nailheads for a traditional touch. They slide perfectly under the homeowners' modern black and gold dining table. The contrasts within the dining room are at once crisp and inviting, perfect for lingering during dinner parties.
Moments
Throughout their home, the owners adorned their spaces with simple linen draperies in creamy whites and beiges (with the exception of the bold dining room drapes by Two Poppies Design). The continuity of soft textiles allows their collected finds to form beautiful vignettes in each space. We kept our reworking of the vintages pieces simple, such as on this secretary. The black polish allows the delicate curved legs and original hardware to form a partnership with the decor items and framed artwork (thanks again, Two Poppies Design, for the custom mat and frame both simple in execution allowing the swan to take center stage and echo the secretary's curved legs).
Two Poppies Design reworked a low-slung coffee table from the 1960s into a bench for the homeowners. Black paint and a cream and black textured fabric keep the bench's look simple while incorporating the classic style. The dark silhouette plays nicely against the soft sage green walls. Textural pillows and a handwoven rug complete the look.
Removing the old finish from this sweet oak dresser and applying a polyurethane topcoat was all it took to add years of life to the homeowners' inherited piece. Vintage glass knobs reflect the age of the dresser, and work nicely with the homeowners' simple accessories.
